Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is JoBot™?

JoBot™ is a proprietary AI system developed by Psychology Network Pty Ltd since 2018 to emulate the day-to-day work of a mental health professional. JoBot™ supports therapeutic interviews, psychological assessment and report writing. The AI system JoBot™ adopts a neuro-symbolic approach to artificial intelligence, combining symbolic programming with large language models (LLMs) to deliver structured, clinically-informed conversations tailored for assessment and therapy.

The Psychology Network Pty Ltd (ABN 92 159 366 944) is an Australian company dedicated to advancing mental health services through the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and clinical psychology. Our research is centred on aligning AI systems with professional standards, improving the transparency of large language models, and reducing the risks associated with AI-driven technologies.

2. The JoBot™ Approach

General-purpose AI can produce clever answers but often without consistency or accountability. JoBot™ takes a different approach. It proposes what a professional would likely do next. Every proposed output is then checked against a formal rule engine. At the core of this engine are rules expressed in formal logic, capturing laws, ethical codes and organisational policies. These rules are not static; they are short, transparent and continuously updated. Each time a change is made, whether because legislation shifts, policies are revised or new ethical guidance is published, the updated logic can be hot-reloaded into the system and immediately incorporated into the prompt. This ensures that JoBot™’s reasoning is always anchored in a living, tested rulebook rather than drifting toward guesswork.

Being aligned with a trusted professional means that JoBot™ is more than just a clever conversational partner. It embodies the actual practice of the professional while remaining accountable to external standards, expressed explicitly in formal logic. The system does not merely “sound like” the professional, it is constrained by the same obligations, updated in real time, that guide safe practice in the real world. In this way, JoBot™ becomes an auditable and reliable extension of the professional, ensuring that clients and organisations can trust its outputs as both authentic and compliant.

3. How does JoBot™ structure its interactions?

JoBot™ combines the strengths of symbolic programming with the generative capabilities of large language models, enriched by clinical knowledge derived from professional practice. At its core, JoBot™ follows fixed dialogue structures in essential interactions, carefully modelled on the way real psychologists conduct assessments and therapy. This ensures that conversations remain consistent, predictable, and clinically sound rather than drifting into unstructured responses. The symbolic layer encodes professional rules, ethical standards, and evidence-based practices in formal logic, while the language model provides flexibility, empathy, and natural expression. Together, this neuro-symbolic design allows JoBot™ to deliver structured conversations that preserve clinical integrity, align with professional obligations, and remain anchored in the trusted behaviours of real practitioners.

4. JoBot™ software

The symbolic components that power JoBot™, including modules written in Python, Prolog and other languages, are available for purchase. These components capture the rule-based foundations of JoBot™, such as formal logic for clinical safety, dialogue structures modelled on real practice and rule-checking engines that ensure compliance with ethical and legal standards. By acquiring these modules, professionals and organisations can integrate JoBot™’s neuro-symbolic framework into their own systems, extend existing AI workflows with trusted logic, or customise the components for domain-specific applications. This makes the underlying technology not only transparent and auditable, but also commercially accessible as building blocks for safe and aligned AI solutions.

5. Who founded JoBot™ and what are their credentials?

Dr Joachim Diederich is an internationally recognised researcher in artificial intelligence, with a career spanning over three decades across Europe, the United States, the Middle East, and Australia. He holds a Habilitation in Computer Science from the University of Hamburg, a PhD in Psycholinguistics/Computational Linguistics from the University of Bielefeld, and a Master's in Clinical Psychology from the University of Münster. He is a registered clinical psychologist, the Founder and Director of the Psychology Network Pty Ltd in Australia and a Fellow of the Australian Psychological Society (APS) College of Clinical Psychologists.

6. Is the AI system JoBot™ a replacement for professional mental health care?

No

JoBot™ is designed to supplement, not replace, clinical practitioners. All AI-generated outputs should be considered educational and supportive. It is not designed for crisis intervention, users requiring urgent help should contact emergency services or crisis hotlines in their region.
